On Monday, we like to draw your attention to certain aspects of the Scottish Women’s Bible Convention. For the next few weeks, we’ll be telling you a bit more about the range of Seminars that are on offer.

What is the seminar about?

Life often takes an unexpected turn – redundancy, financial difficulties, health crises, broken
relationships and sudden bereavement – but does that mean God is no longer in control or that He no longer loves us? Is He punishing us for something we did in the past? These are questions that often come into our minds, whether we’re the ones going through a hard time or seeking to help others who are. How does God’s word help us to understand these trials and what comfort is there for those who are struggling?

Who is the seminar for?

Anyone who has been through hard times in the past or wants to know how to be prepared for them in the future – as well as for those who are seeking to support those who are currently experiencing trials.

Why is this area important?

We cannot escape the challenges of living in a fallen world and God doesn’t promise that we will, but we can prepare for them and understand why the Lord may be taking us through them.

Besides speaking, what one thing about the Scottish Women’s Bible Convention are you looking forward to and why?

Hearing God speak to women who are hungry for His word!

On the day of the convention we are hugely grateful to those who have helped in the past to steward and serve tea and coffee. To help this year’s convention run we are looking for about 18 people to serve in this way. If you think you could do this, then we love for you to sign-up to one of our free tickets available on Eventbrite. You would need to be available from 8.30am on the day.

Scottish Women’s Bible Convention 2021

There are now only 3 sleeps until the Scottish Women’s Bible Convention. I hope you are all as excited as the planning committee. To make the most of the day there are a few things which we thought it would be useful for you all to know.

• Firstly, doors will open at 9.30am and the bookstall will be open. Come prepared with your tea or coffee.
• The first session will start at 10am and the last session will be finished by 3.30pm.
• There will be a bookstall provided by 10ofthose.com, so do come prepared to purchase some awesome books!
• Nursing Mums are more than welcome to bring their baby.  There is be a room with a video feed available if you want to breastfeed in privacy.
• Lunch is not provided but there are plenty of places nearby to pick up some lunch, or why not bring something with you so you can use the lunchtime period to have fellowship with one another.
• Charlotte Chapel is situated at 58 Shandwick Place and is easily accessible by public transport. The train is an easy option as Haymarket is a 10-minute walk from Charlotte Chapel. Tram or bus stops are just outside the church.  The Lothian Bus website will give you all the information needed. Parking around Charlotte is all on-street parking and pay and display.  Melville Street is the best place to aim for. It is possible to park a little further out where is it free on a Saturday and walk the rest. Edinburgh Council has an interactive map which shows the parking restrictions and where it is free to park on Saturday. If you are coming from Glasgow or over a bridge an alternative would be to park and ride at Ingliston You can park for free and then get the tram into town. The tram stop is 2 mins walk from the church.

With the convention happening this Saturday we thought we’d ask our speaker Leonie to share a little more about she will be speaking on.

What are you speaking about at the Scottish Women’s Convention and why?

The middle chapters of the book of Esther because it’s a great story that tells the great story! What a delight to work through it again and relearn what I’ve forgotten and be taught anew. I find Esther intriguing – a cracking story but one that is quite dark and sinister, not for the faint-hearted. God gives us stories so that we might know in our hearts and not just in our heads what it means that He is with us in the midst of life in this world.

Besides speaking, what one thing about the Scottish Women’s Bible Convention are you looking forward to and why?

You mean apart from the fact that it’s held in Scotland?!  Being together, as God’s covenant people, remembering together his promises to us.

Meet Leonie, our speaker…from Wilmslow, Cheshire, where the high street has an Aston Martin dealership nestled between the Co-op and the Cancer Research shop! Colleen Rooney frequents the local Waitrose in our neighbouring village and various footballers live in the surrounding countryside. It has the appearance in the world’s eyes of “living your best life” but desperately needs to hear the offer of eternal life.

Can you tell us a little about yourself including your family, what you do etc?
I have been  married to Andrew for seven years. We don’t have any children and we are currently between dogs, which I hope is not going to be for long! I have been the youth, children and families worker at St John’s Lindow church for almost two years.

Andrew is a public rights of way inspector’s. Alongside that he has a great side-line in house-group leading with me and helping out with youth and children’s ministry – he plays a mean Pilate and recently played Barabbas at holiday club. Conversely, I often end up on forgotten footpaths “just to see where they lead to”.

What are some of the challenges and joys of being involved in gospel ministry?
Two snapshots of the last month sum up some of the joys and challenges of gospel work: I had a message recently from a member of the youth group who has been involved for the last 8 years. He’s not from a Christian home but has come faithfully since primary school to St John’s children and youth groups. He wrote “ I’m thankful for all the hard work you’ve put in for us but I have decided now is the right time for me to focus on other things. I hope you understand.” I’m heartbroken, does he know what he is turning his back on? I know if he is chosen he can’t escape God’s call but it is discouraging.

Yet we have been joined by 5 Chinese families in the last month – they sent their children to the holiday club, came to the holiday club special service and have stayed! 4 of the families are newly arrived in the UK, having decided to leave Hong Kong because of the political situation there. The other family have moved within the UK. Our Sunday school has doubled in size overnight and our church has suddenly become international, which are great problems to have.

What one thing has the Lord been teaching you about yourself and himself in recent times?
How important it is to live by faith and not by sight: believing that He will keep every promise He has made, that Jesus will return in glory as the judge God has appointed.I have found it hard when a global pandemic has not brought people to their knees to seek God but just to “hang on in there” til it’s safe to come out and then carry on as before.

Sharon James, from London, will be leading a seminar called “Glorifying God as a member of society”.

What is the seminar about?

Jesus is Lord of all! We don’t just live for him in our homes and churches – we are called to live for him in all we do.

Who is the seminar for?

As Christians, we are both members of God’s family, and members of human communities. How can we live for God’s glory in society?

Why is this area important?

We are called to to love God and love our neighbour.

Besides speaking, what one thing about the Scottish Women’s Bible Convention are you looking forward to and why?

It is always encouraging to meet fellow Christians and learn from God’s Word together.
