Wondering whether you should go to the Scottish Women’s Bible Convention and why you should be excited about “another Christian conference”?  To help we asked different people why they benefitted from last years convention and encouraging others to buy tickets.

Ann Lyon from the Scottish Borders came last year and answered some questions for us.

What were your highlights from the 2016 Scottish Women’s Bible Convention?
I liked the variety of both speakers and subjects and it was great to have the opportunity to choose from a list talks/workshops. Also meeting friendly women from all over Scotland. I went to workshops on my own and instantly felt that I was among friends!

Why would you encourage someone to go this year?
I really enjoyed it last year and I think it would appeal to women in my church and bible study group. What struck me was the great teaching and guidance given, I really felt I was learning.

What one thing about the 2017 Scottish Women’s Bible Convention are you looking forward to and why?
I liked the format last year and hoping it will be similar.

Seminar – How to Study the Gospels

On Mondays we like to draw your attention to certain aspects of the Scottish Women’s Convention. For the next few weeks we’ll be telling you a bit more about the range of Seminars that are on offer.

Jody MacIver, from St Andrews will be leading a seminar on How to Study the Gospels.

What is the seminar about?
This seminar will aim to give us the tools to be able to understand and apply the gospels – particularly the trickier narrative bits.

Who is the seminar for?
Anyone at all! While the gospels are probably the bit of the bible we’re most familiar with, it can be difficult to see how we can apply the narrative sections. We can enjoy reading the stories but struggle to see how they should have an impact on our relationship with Christ or other parts of our lives. So this is for anyone who would like to be able to read the bible for themselves more effectively – not just those who are in teaching roles.

Why is this area important?
If we believe that ‘All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness’, then it’s vital to equip ourselves to understand the bible as best we can. In the gospels we get an up-close and personal look at Jesus – how he lived as well as what he taught – and every bit of it is essential for our walk with him. The more confidence we have in understanding the gospel accounts the better equipped we are to know Jesus and enjoy life to the full in him, and the more equipped we’ll be to share the good news of what he did with others, too.

Besides your seminar, what one thing about the Scottish Women’s Convention are you looking forward to and why?
I attended the conference last year, and as well as getting lots out of the teaching, I loved catching up with and meeting women from different parts of Scotland. I’m looking forward to getting to do that again!

What were your highlights from the 2016 Scottish Women’s Bible Convention?

I thoroughly enjoyed last year’s conference. Being able to meet with other women to listen to God’s word was a unique experience and having the opportunity to share in common struggles and encourage one another was very helpful. Having the flexibility to choose seminars on topics that were relevant to me was great and helped me focus on the application of the teaching in my everyday life.

Why would you encourage someone to go this year?

I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity of a whole day out from ‘busy life’ to focus on God. To have an opportunity to listen to teaching of the highest quality which is so relevant for women today is not something to be missed!

Seminar – Serving Jesus in the 9 to 5

What is the seminar about?
Living out our faith in the workplace

Who is the seminar for?
Any Christian working in a secular environment who seeks to live their life in the 9-5 in a way that is Christlike.

Why is this area important?
Across the course of our lives we can spend a lot of time at work! And its one of the places where we are most likely to interact with non-Christians and have the opportunity to share the gospel or live out our lives in a way that is the fragrance of Christ to those around us.

Besides your seminar, what one thing about the Scottish Women’s Convention are you looking forward to and why?
The Bible teaching and a day of fellowship with other Christian women from across Scotland.

Caroline Dodds from Glasgow (for TWO MORE WEEKS!!) came last year and answered some questions for us.

What were your highlights from the 2016 Scottish Women’s Bible Convention?

The convention helped to lift my eyes above the newborn-twin-chaos which I was inhabiting! I was feeling completely overwhelmed, exhausted, and unsure of what use I would be in the kingdom of God as a burnt-out milk machine. Being taught from the Bible about God’s purposes, and hearing the encouragement to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, was a lifesaver. Meeting with other women who were facing similar challenges, or were a little further along the road than I am, made a huge difference during a very difficult time. The twins seemed to enjoy bits of it too (particularly the nursing mums room) and screamed through other bits (thanks to everyone who helped!).

Why would you encourage someone to go this year?

The Bible teaching is top notch, the singing is super-encouraging, and the seminars cover lots of aspects of the Christian life which will help you to worship Jesus in everything you do.

What one thing about the 2017 Scottish Women’s Bible Convention are you looking forward to and why?

Seeing other sisters from all over Scotland who love the Lord and want to make him known in their spheres of influence, because that always inspires me to do the same!

Alison McKendrick from East Kilbride came last year and answered some questions for us.

What were your highlights from the 2016 Scottish Women’s Bible Convention?

I thought the whole convention was excellent – the organisation, the speakers, the worship team, venue and hospitality.

The encouragement received from the talks was just what I needed.  To fix our eyes on Jesus, finish the race well.  Remove all the obstacles that slow us down, confess negativity, pride, self-righteousness.  Be honest and completely open in our relationship with God.  1 Thessalonians 1:9-10, ‘Turn from idols to serve the living and true God, as we wait for Jesus to return’.  God is not working for our happiness but for our holiness.

Why would you encourage someone to go this year?

To engage with other Christian women who face the same struggles as us.  To learn more of God’s promises and purpose for our lives.  To take time out of our busy lives to focus on Jesus and worship together as women of God.  To be open and to listen to what God is speaking into our lives.

What one thing about the 2017 Scottish Women’s Bible Convention are you looking forward to and why?

Being with women of God as we worship, share and learn together, so we can grow in holiness, with the power of the Spirit of God, to be more like Jesus.

Wondering whether you should go to the Scottish Women’s Bible Convention and why you should be excited about “another Christian conference”?  To help we asked different people why SWBC is for all women and is something we should all be excited by.  These people have either already booked their tickets, are involved in planning or are enthusiastically advertising at their churches.

This week we asked Alan McKnight, minister at Harper Church in Glasgow and part of the West of Scotland Gospel Partnership Steering Group, why he is encouraging the women in his church to go.

Alan writes,”When God’s word is faithfully taught his voice is heard and lives are changed. That’s why I’m so encouraged by the work of the Scottish Women’s Bible Convention because it is all about God’s Word and it provides a model for women opening up God’s word with other women.

We are encouraging all of our Harper women to go along and enjoy a feast of good teaching together with a varied range of seminars that will help with living the Christian life in the world as it is today. We see the Scottish Women’s Bible Convention as a model that our women can learn from and that it will enrich women’s ministry in the local church as well as building friendships across the various congregations supporting the event.”

What is the title of your seminar at the Scottish Women’s Convention?

Gender

What is the seminar about?

This seminar will be an introduction to gender looking at the current cultural viewpoint and how we should think about this topic biblically.  It will also look at how we care for those who struggle with gender dysphoria.

Why is this area important?

In the past Christians living in Western culture have enjoyed the benefit of being in world which largely shared our assumptions on sexuality and gender.  We can no longer assume that is the case.  In the past 30 years there has been a fundamental shift in our culture’s view of sexuality and in recent years the traditional view of gender is changing. As a result, as believers, we can find ourselves increasingly in the minority and misunderstood.  So how should we respond to all this?  How should we respond to what we hear in the media but closer home in our communities, schools, families, and churches?  How should we relate to someone who is transitioning gender or has already transitioned?  

We don’t want to be Christian women who rage against the tide of a changing culture.  Nor do we don’t want to be so ill-equipped at talking about this issue that we remain silent.  Instead we want to go back to our Bibles and think carefully about what God is saying – holding up society’s views and, our own, to the truth-revealing mirror that is God’s word.  Only then can we be truly Biblical in our response and show the world around us a different view with love and grace.  

Who is the seminar for?

Anyone and everyone!  We all need to be confident and assured that what the Bible says on sexuality and gender is in fact good news.  Whether is it helping our children understand the different views they are hearing at high school or so we can love well a member of our congregation who struggles in this area, only when we believe the goodness of God’s word, will we be better equipped to share this truth with others.

Besides your seminar, what one thing about the Scottish Women’s Convention are you looking forward to and why?

It was such a joy last year to see women from across Scotland come to together to learn from God’s word that I think I am looking forward to more of the same!

Thursday Spotlight

On Thursdays we want to give you an insight into the lives of some of the women involved in the Scottish Women’s Convention.  Some of these women are involved in full time ministry in the local Church, while others balance serving in the church with a secular job.

We sent various people a questionnaire asking them to give us a taste of what they do, the challenges they face and what they are looking forward to about the Scottish Women’s Convention.

What area of ministry do you work in?

Pretty much everything – I’m the minister’s wife.

How did you come to work in this particular area of ministry?

I married a minister – in fact I married an airline pilot, who then became minister!

Give one great challenge and one great joy of working in gospel ministry?

Seeing the most unlikely people turn to Christ and have their transformed.

What one thing has the Lord been teaching you about yourself and himself in recent times?

That I am not as capable as I think I am and he is far more capable than I ever imagined.
